Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

Feast: 27 Nov

When to pray: Begin on 18 Nov and finish on 26 Nov, the eve of the feast. A novena is prayed on nine consecutive days.

Prayer for each day

Mary, conceived without sin, you showed St Catherine your hands full of graces. Pray for me as I turn to you, keep me under your protection, and lead me and those I love to your Son. Amen.

Day by day

Day 1: Catherine Labouré in the chapel

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Luke 1:28, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, in 1830 you appeared to St Catherine Labouré in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity in Paris. As the angel greeted you as full of grace, I greet you with love. Draw me to prayer before your Son in the Blessed Sacrament. Amen.

Day 2: Mary's hands of rays

Every best gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration.

James 1:17, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, you showed St Catherine rays of light streaming from your hands, signs of the graces you obtain for those who ask. Every good gift comes from the Father of lights. Obtain for me the graces I need, and especially those I forget to ask for. Amen.

Day 3: 'O Mary conceived without sin'

I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

Gen 3:15, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, conceived without sin, you are the woman whose offspring would crush the serpent's head. I have recourse to you. Keep me from sin, protect me from the enemy, and make my heart pure. Amen.

Day 4: The M and the Cross

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.

John 19:25, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, the back of the medal shows the letter M beneath the Cross, for you stood beside the Cross of Jesus. Teach me to stay near the Cross in my own sufferings, and to unite my sorrows with his. Amen.

Day 5: Two hearts

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed.

Luke 2:35, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, the medal shows the Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and your heart pierced by a sword. Unite my heart to these two hearts, that I may love as Jesus loves and suffer with the faith with which you suffered. Amen.

Day 6: Twelve stars

And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

Apoc 12:1 [Rev 12:1], Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, twelve stars surround the medal, recalling the woman crowned with twelve stars. Queen of heaven, watch over the Church built on the twelve apostles, and keep me faithful to her teaching. Amen.

Day 7: Ratisbonne's conversion

And immediately there fell from his eyes as it were scales: and he received his sight. And rising up, he was baptized.

Acts 9:18, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, in 1842 Alphonse Ratisbonne, who wore your medal reluctantly, saw you in a church in Rome and was converted. As scales fell from the eyes of St Paul, open the eyes of those I love who do not believe. Amen.

Day 8: Wearing the medal

Let not mercy and truth leave thee, put them about thy neck, and write them in the tables of thy heart.

Prov 3:3, Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, I wear your medal not as a charm but as a sign of trust in your prayers and of my love for your Son. Bind mercy and truth about my neck, and let this sign remind me each day to live as a child of God. Amen.

Day 9: Spreading the medal

Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will tell you what great things he hath done for my soul.

Ps 65:16 [Ps 66:16], Douay-Rheims

Immaculate Virgin, many have received grace through your medal and have shared it with others. Make me generous in spreading devotion to you, and let me tell others what great things God has done for my soul. Amen.
