Confession

How to go to Confession

An examination of conscience by the Ten Commandments and the precepts of the Church, a simple guide to the steps, and the Act of Contrition.

Examination of conscience · Precepts of the Church · The steps · Act of Contrition

The steps

  1. Prepare: pray to the Holy Spirit for light, then examine your conscience (below).
  2. Be sorry for your sins and resolve not to sin again, with God's help.
  3. Go to the priest. Make the Sign of the Cross. You may say: "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (how long) since my last confession."
  4. Confess your sins. You must confess every mortal sin you remember, by kind and roughly how many times. Confessing venial sins is also good.
  5. Listen to the priest's advice, and accept the penance he gives you.
  6. Pray an Act of Contrition when the priest asks.
  7. The priest gives absolution. Answer "Amen."
  8. Do your penance promptly, and thank God for His mercy.

Examination of conscience

Take a few quiet minutes. Ask the Holy Spirit for light, then read slowly and note anything that applies. Choose the version that suits you.

The precepts of the Church

The precepts are the minimum the Church asks of every Catholic (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2041 to 2043).

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation, and rest from unnecessary work.

  • Have I missed Mass on a Sunday or holy day of obligation through my own fault?
  • Have I kept Sunday as a day of rest, prayer and family, as far as I could?

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.

  • Have I gone more than a year without confession while aware of mortal sin?
  • Have I put off confession out of fear, pride or laziness?

3. You shall receive Holy Communion at least during the Easter season.

  • Have I failed to receive Holy Communion during the Easter season?
  • Have I received Communion without the hour's fast, or without due reverence?

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence.

  • Have I kept the fast and abstinence of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?
  • Have I kept Friday penance as my bishops ask?

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.

  • Have I given what I reasonably can of my time, talents and money to my parish and the poor?

Good to know

  • A sin is mortal when three things are all true: the matter is grave, you knew it was seriously wrong, and you freely chose it (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1857). If one of these is missing, the sin is not mortal, though it may still be venial.
  • If you honestly forget a sin, it is forgiven with the others. Mention it at your next confession if you remember it later.
  • Never knowingly hide a mortal sin. That makes the confession invalid, and the hidden sin, along with the others, must be confessed again.
  • The priest may never reveal what you confess (the seal of confession).
  • These questions help you remember. They don't replace the Church's teaching or your confessor's guidance.

Act of Contrition

O my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.
