Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe
Feast: 12 Dec
When to pray: Begin on 3 Dec and finish on 11 Dec, the eve of the feast. A novena is prayed on nine consecutive days.
Prayer for each day
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you told Juan Diego not to be afraid because you are his mother. Hold me and this intention in the fold of your mantle and lead me to your Son. Amen.
Day by day
Day 1: A mother appears at Tepeyac
And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
Apoc 12:1 [Rev 12:1], Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, in 1531 you came to the hill of Tepeyac as a mother to the peoples of the New World. Holy Scripture speaks of a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet. Come to me also, holy Mother, and bring me closer to your Son. Amen.
Day 2: Am I not here, who am your mother?
As one whom the mother caresseth, so will I comfort you, and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
Isa 66:13, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you assured Juan Diego that he need not be afraid, for you were his mother. As one whom the mother caresses, so will the Lord comfort us. When I am anxious, remind me that I am under your protection, and hold me close to your heart. Amen.
Day 3: Juan Diego the humble messenger
But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise: and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong.
1 Cor 1:27, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you chose a humble man, St Juan Diego, to carry your message to the bishop. God chooses the weak things of the world to confound the strong. Make me humble and willing to be used by God, however small I may be. Amen.
Day 4: Roses in winter
The land that was desolate and impassable shall be glad, and the wilderness shall rejoice, and shall flourish like the lily.
Isa 35:1, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the cold of December you gave Juan Diego roses as a sign, where no roses could grow. The wilderness shall rejoice and flourish. Bring life where my heart is barren, and give me signs of hope in the hard seasons of my life. Amen.
Day 5: The image on the tilma
Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Luke 1:48, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you left your image on the tilma of Juan Diego, and generations have come to venerate it. All generations shall call you blessed. Imprint the likeness of your Son on my soul, as your image was imprinted on that humble cloak. Amen.
Day 6: Mother of the unborn
And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.
Luke 1:41, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you appeared as a mother with child, and you are honoured as protector of the unborn. When you greeted Elizabeth, the child leapt in her womb. Protect every unborn child, strengthen mothers in difficulty, and convert all hearts to reverence for human life. Amen.
Day 7: Healing of the uncle
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man. And the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him.
James 5:15, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, while Juan Diego was with you, his uncle Juan Bernardino was healed. The prayer of faith shall save the sick man. I commend to you all who are sick, especially those I love. Obtain for them healing of body and soul, according to God's will. Amen.
Day 8: A people converted
Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
Matt 28:19, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, after your appearing a great multitude of people came to be baptized. Our Lord commanded his apostles to teach all nations. Pray for missionaries and catechists, and lead all peoples of the Americas to the one true faith. Amen.
Day 9: Patroness of the Americas
After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.
John 19:27, Douay-Rheims
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, from the Cross Jesus gave you to the beloved disciple as his mother. I take you as my mother too. Watch over the United States, Canada and all the nations of this continent, and keep us faithful to your Son. Amen.
